Living with a Yokai
The master's thesis explores the questions of what Yōkai 妖怪 and Kami 神 are, what role they play in Japanese culture, and how they have been depicted in the past and present. The research delves into the Shinto religion and examines Japanese art history with a focus on Yōkai.
As an artistic research project, the practical component addresses how a contemporary representation of Yōkai can be created and how the cultural context can be communicated to the audience. These considerations led to the creation of an artwork that establishes a connection between Shinto practices and the condition of migraines. Based on this artwork an exhibition was curated that centered around the theme of migraines, while also providing insights into Yōkai.
